Why ranges rather than one figure? A 1978 Kwikset off a bedroom door and a Grade 1 Medeco on a shopfront are nothing like the same job. Anyone quoting the same for both hasn’t asked enough questions yet.

One thing worth knowing before you ring anybody
If a shop quotes $19, $29 or $39 down the phone, that isn’t a price. It’s a hook. The number gets you to say yes, then somebody turns up, has a look at your door, and the bill lands near $250 to $390. There’s a documented case from earlier this year where a $150 quote finished above $2,000.

Why Kenner is different
Your door sticks because the ground is moving
Most of Kenner sits at or below sea level on delta soil, and this metro sinks somewhere between 0.2 and 0.8 inches a year. Slabs don’t go down evenly. One corner drops, the frame twists with it, and the deadbolt that used to slide home starts catching the edge of the strike.
So you start lifting the door by the handle to get it to lock. Then one morning the key snaps off flush with the cylinder.
That key didn’t break because it was worn out. It broke because you were using it as a lever against a bolt with nowhere to go.
We’ll say the bit that costs us money: most of these aren’t broken locks at all. Move the strike, shim a hinge, half an hour, and the lock you already own works again. If someone’s quoting a whole new lockset for a door that sticks, get a second opinion — from us or from anybody.
Three things that chew up hardware round here
- The ground. Cracks over the door frame, a floor that slopes, and a door that sticks — all at once means the house moved, not the lock.
- Salt and damp. We sit between the lake and the river, thirty miles off the Gulf. Moist air gets into the cylinder and condenses when it cools at night, and salt does the rest. Marine-grade stainless, solid brass and PVD hold up. The $12 special from the hardware aisle doesn’t.
- Water. Rain floods Kenner most often, surge does the damage. Arthur came through on 18 June and we took some of the worst of it in the metro. University City, Chateau Estates and Rivertown have all been under before. A submerged cylinder packs with silt and seizes solid.
Season runs to 30 November, worst mid-August into October. Colorado State put the Louisiana coast at a 52% chance of a named storm this year. If your locks are older than your roof, sort them before September.

Is Kenner safe? Here are the actual numbers
Kenner has a property crime problem and a fairly ordinary violent crime picture. Violent crime runs around 344.7 per 100,000, roughly 4% below the national rate. Property crime runs 2,832.8 per 100,000, about 61% above it. Roughly 1,767 property crimes get reported in a year — near enough a 1-in-35 chance for any given household.
Two more worth knowing. Kenner has one of the higher vehicle theft rates in the country, about a 1-in-372 annual chance. And crime costs the average household here somewhere near $1,359 a year.
Now the part that changes what you should do about it
Nationally, 34% of burglars come in the front door. Another 22% take the back, 9% the garage. About 55.7% force their way in — and 37.8% force nothing at all, because a door was open.
When a door gets forced, it’s almost never the lock that fails. It’s the frame. A standard residential door goes with 100 to 150 pounds behind it, because the strike plate is held on by two three-quarter-inch screws biting into soft jamb trim.
The answer isn’t a better deadbolt. It’s three-inch screws through the strike and hinges into the actual stud, plus a reinforcement plate. Around $30 of parts and twenty minutes. Work on convicted burglars found roughly 60% move on once they can see a house has been hardened.

Real problems, real numbers. In two of the three the answer came in under what the customer was braced for.
Chateau Estates — deadbolt wouldn’t throw
1971 slab home off Chateau Boulevard. She’d been lifting the front door by the handle for eight months to make it lock. That morning the key snapped flush with the cylinder, and another company had already quoted a full lockset without seeing the door. The lock was fine. About half an inch of settlement had twisted the jamb, so the bolt was hitting the plate roughly 7mm high and binding every single time. Cracks above the frame and a floor sloping toward the front of the house told the rest. Pulled the key, re-cut the strike, put a reinforcement plate and three-inch screws in while we were there.
35 minutes. $145. No hardware replaced.
MSY Long Term Garage — lost every key
Flight in at 9:40pm after nine days away. The only key to a 2019 push-to-start had gone somewhere in transit, no spare at home, dealer shut. No key to copy means originating from the VIN and pairing to the immobiliser through the OBD port. Opened the door without damage, checked the registration in the glovebox against his licence, cut the emergency blade to code, programmed on site — then deleted the lost key out of the car’s memory so whoever finds it can’t start it.
55 minutes. $385 including after-hours. No tow.
Williams Boulevard shop — manager left, keys didn’t
Six openings: front, rear delivery, stockroom, office, electrical closet and a roll-down gate. All keyed differently, all standard keyways, which meant anyone could have cut copies at a kiosk over the years and nobody had kept a record. Put the shop on a master system with a restricted keyway. Staff hold change keys that open only what their job needs, the owner holds one master. Keying schedule written down and handed over on paper and as a PDF.

How to tell a real locksmith from a bad one
Louisiana is one of about a dozen states that actually licenses locksmiths. Firms are licensed by the State Fire Marshal and the numbers look like F-####. Which means round here, “is this locksmith legitimate?” has a real answer you can go and check — and the whole scam depends on you not knowing that.
Five questions. Ask them before anyone gets in a van.
- “What’s your Louisiana State Fire Marshal licence number?” A real firm answers in two seconds.
- “What’s the total, including the call-out?” Not “starting at”. One number.
- “Will you need to drill it?” The honest answer is “almost certainly not, and here’s when I would”.
- “What’s your address?” A Louisiana street address. Not a PO box, not a “dispatch address”.
- “Cards and an itemised invoice?” Cash only with no receipt tells you everything.
And the bit people don’t think about until it’s too late — the BBB makes this point and they’re right: somebody who drills your door now knows where you live and how they got in. The money isn’t the worst of it.

Why do I have to lift my door to lock it?
The frame has moved. Subsidence here runs 0.2 to over 0.8 inches a year and uneven settlement stops the bolt meeting the strike. Realigning it is normally a half-hour job.
Can you make a car key if I’ve lost all of them?
Yes. We cut from the VIN and program to your immobiliser on site, then delete the lost key from the car’s memory. Longer and dearer than copying one. Bring ID and proof of ownership.
Is a locksmith cheaper than the dealer for car keys?
Usually, often by $200 to $400. Dealers charge $150 to $600 for programming and normally want the car brought to them.
Do you charge more at night?
Yes, and we say so on the phone. After hours adds roughly $25 to $75 depending on the job. It never appears on the invoice as a surprise.
Is the kiosk at Walmart any good?
For a spare brass house key off a clean original, honestly yes — and it’s cheaper than us. It won’t help with a worn original, a restricted keyway, or anything with a chip in it.
